Playlist

Keyboard: Space play/pause, ← → seek 5s (10s with Shift), , . step a frame, M mute, F full screen, [ ] set A and B.

Video files usually end up in whatever player the operating system ships with, which is fine until you need to slow a golf swing down, watch one specific eight-second section again and again, or check a single frame. Then you are fighting a player that was designed for watching films.

This one is built for studying video. Slow playback to a quarter speed or push it past double, mark an A and a B point to loop a section hands-free, step one frame at a time, grab a still, or load an .srt or .vtt caption file to read along. Everything runs against a file on your disk — nothing is uploaded, and there is nothing between you and the picture.

How to use it

  1. Choose a video file, or several at once to build a playlist. Playback starts immediately.
  2. Set the playback speed anywhere from 0.25x to 4x. Audio pitch is preserved, so speech at 1.5x is still intelligible.
  3. Press Set A at the start of the section you care about and Set B at the end. Playback then loops between them until you clear it.
  4. Use the frame buttons (or the , and . keys) to step one frame at a time through a moment, and set the frame rate box to match the source so the steps are exact.
  5. Press Snapshot to save the current frame as a PNG at full source resolution.
  6. Load an .srt or .vtt file to show captions. Subtitles are converted in the browser, so a subtitle file from any source will work.

Questions

Which video formats can it play?

Whatever your browser can decode: MP4 with H.264 or HEVC, WebM, and Ogg in most cases. MKV and some other containers depend on the browser — Chrome and Edge tend to handle them, Safari and Firefox often will not. If a file does not play, the codec is the reason, not the player.

Why does A-B repeat matter?

Because the alternative is hitting the left-arrow key every few seconds for a year. Musicians loop two bars, language learners loop one sentence, coaches loop one repetition, and anyone reviewing a bug loops the seconds where it happens. Marking A and B means you can just watch.

Is the frame stepping accurate?

It moves by one frame at the frame rate you specify — so if the video is 25 fps, set 25 and each step is the next frame. Browsers seek to the nearest frame boundary they hold, which on a variable-frame-rate video can occasionally skip, but it is exact on the constant-frame-rate footage cameras and phones produce.
